It didn't matter how skilled or valuable I was to my company, not having a degree put an artificial ceiling on my advancement. Yes, graduates that have real world or hands on experience are highly sought after compared to those that just made it through school with a 3.5. The issue however isn't the schools. Used to be that the people that went into engineering did it because it was what they were interested in. Now that engineering has the reputation as such a great career, people wholly unfit are getting engineering degrees. I see people graduating that don't know the difference between a ratchet and phillips. They can't say they haven't had the chance to learn, there are tons of opportunities to get their hands dirty. They get the degrees but they're not engineers.
